Title: An integrated approach to structural shape optimization of linearly elastic structures. Part I: General methodology
Abstract: The underlying aim of the present work is to develop a versatile and efficient research program ADOPT (adaptivity and shape optimization) integrating finite element analysis, shape optimization, automatic mesh generation and adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) procedures for linear elastic structures. In this paper the methodology of such an approach and the selection of suitable design variables are presented. Several examples, excluding the use of adaptivity, are included to illustrate the benefits of this approach. In Part II, anomalies arising in predicting the optimum shape due to discretization error are discussed. The need for AMR procedures in shape optimization is illustrated using several examples.
