Abstract: Au debut du xie siecle, a l’heure ou Murasaki Shikibu prenait le pinceau pour rediger le Roman du Genji, le Japon etait soumis a l’autorite d’une cour imperiale dominee par quelques familles aristocratiques. Selon certaines estimations, l’archipel aurait compte alors une population de sept a huit millions d’habitants, dont 100 000 environ etaient rassembles dans la capitale du pays, Heian-kyo, l’actuelle ville de Kyoto (fig. 1).
