Abstract: This paper addresses the competitiveness of the U. S. construction industry. The goal is to define a possible scope for the subject, outline some key issues and dimensions, and examine strategies for change in this area. Special attention is given to the role of research and technology in improving the industry's competitiveness. The scope of competitiveness can be examined on at least three fronts: competitiveness reflected in the affordability of construction versus other 'products' on which the nation and its consumers can spend their money; foreign competition; competitiveness of U. S. firms when working overseas.
