Title: A study of nitrogen oxide containing vasodilators on guinea pig trachea, a nonvascular smooth muscle
Abstract: 1. Sodium nitroprusside, sodium nitrite and papaverine produced concentration-dependent relaxation of guinea-pig isolated tracheal chain preparations contracted with KCI (20 mM), but had no effect on the resting tone of the preparation.
2. Methemoglobin and methylene blue known inhibitors of cGMP accumulation rightward shifts of concentration curves of sodium nitroprusside and sodium nitrite.
3. Neither methemoglobin nor methylene blue modified the papaverine-induced relaxation.
4. It is concluded that sodium nitroprusside and sodium nitrite induced relaxation of the guinea-pig trachea may be partly due to their cGMP elevating action. Papaverine induced relaxation seems to be totally independent of cGMP action.
