Abstract: This article describes the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) program in the United States, which is an attempt to incorporate vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle communications in order to reduce the number of deaths attributed to vehicle crashes. The VII Coalition, which includes representatives of the U.S. Department of Transportation, the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials, and several automobile manufacturers will guide and overseen the program. The article describes the coalition's goals and its prospects for meeting them. It also examines similar programs in Europe, such as the United Kingdom's Cooperative Vehicle Highway Systems.
