Title: 120 Years of Mining Education in New Zealand - What Next?
Abstract: The mining industry has made a significant and widely acknowledged contribution to the social and economic development of New Zealand. The discovery of gold in the early 1860s led to the establishment of many 'Schools of Mines' in the districts where gold mining was active. These continued with mixed fortunes as they serviced the practical needs of the industry and those at Reefton and Thames continued through the 1950s. One, the Otago School of Mines (OSM), having been established within the University of Otago in 1879, achieved higher academic levels and degree status and took the better graduates from the district schools.
