Abstract: The university sector in New Zealand is currently surrounded by unprecedented conflict. The fact is that for over fifteen years, university salaries have fallen behind both domestic and international comparators, and underfunding of universities in New Zealand has resulted into producing a graduate at about half the cost of an Australian graduate. The discontent is not just about salaries but also about the very nature of the university sector in New Zealand.
