Abstract: Der ersten Begegnung zwischen G. und dem Schweizer Künstler und Kunsttheoretiker Johann Heinrich Meyer, die im Dezember 1786 in der Gemäldegalerie des Quirinalspalastes in Rom stattfand, folgten nahezu fünfzig Jahre enger Zusammenarbeit und Freundschaft. Im zweiten Teil der Italienischen Reise hat G. dem Freund ein eindrucksvolles Denkmal gesetzt, indem er beschrieb, was er ihm für sein Verhältnis zu Werken der bildenden Kunst verdankte: »Der Glanz der größten Kunstwerke blendet mich nicht mehr, ich wandle nun im Anschauen, in der wahren unterscheidenden Erkenntniß.
