Title: Former Prime Ministers and Presidents: Suggestions for Study and Comparison
Abstract: As of 1983, 34 British prime ministers and United States presidents had held office during the twentieth century. Collectively, they served 166 years and had also gone on to live 310 further years. Some former prime ministers and presidents led active public careers while others retired from politics to private activities. What makes these groups interesting is: 1) that many of the years after holding office occurred while the individual remained mentally and physically vigorous and capable; and 2) the patterns observable in the two countries diverge considerably. In this note we identify and compare the similarities and differences between former heads of government in Great Britain and the United States and recommend that increased attention be paid to the study of these often important years in the careers of important national leaders. Students and teachers of the American and British constitutional systems com monly remark on the notable differences between the positions of head of government in their respective polities. Certainly prime ministers and presidents operate within distinct political constraints that have emerged from the separate political traditions of the United States and Great Britain.
