Title: <i>The Qualities of Effective Presidents</i>: An Overview from FDR to Bill Clinton
Abstract: The highly personalized nature of the modern American presidency makes the strengths and weaknesses of the White House incumbent of the utmost importance. This article summarizes the conclusions of an interpretative study of the eleven American presidents from Franklin Roosevelt to Bill Clinton. It discusses the qualities that have served well and poorly in the Oval Office under six headings: communication to the public, organizational capacity, political skill, policy vision, cognitive style, and emotional intelligence.
