Abstract: Any type of resistance training in which voluntary maximal contractions are performed may produce strength gains. The advantages and disadvantages of the five main types of weight training—isometric, isotonic, isokinetic, variable resistance, and eccentric—are discussed in detail. Further research comparing the different types of strength training is needed.
