The vertical tire-pavement contact stress over the contact area plays an important role and determines the immediate pavement responses within the pavement structure, which eventually affect the long-term performance of the pavement. As a traditional approximation method in many pavement studies, tire-pavement contact stress is frequently assumed to be uniformly distributed over a circular contact area, and simply equal to the tire pressure. However, measurements of tire-pavement contact interaction have demonstrated that the tire-pavement contact stress and contact area are quite different from the traditional tire model. In this study, the measurement data of tire-pavement interaction under various tire loading conditions was analyzed to characterize the tire-pavement contact area and the relationship with tire load and tire inflation pressure. The characterized tire-pavement contact area was used to modify the traditional tire model in different ways to more accurately represent the vertical tire-pavement contact stress.Read More
