Title: The Travails of Illegitimacy: Historical Setting
Abstract: This chapter discusses the three main periods of scholarship on ISKCON, which starts during the mid-1960s—when the movement was founded—and ends in the present. The first period was from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, and features counterculture discourse. Unlike the first period, the second period was marked by cult controversies, which subsequently prioritized ISKCON's self-authenticating efforts. The third and final period of scholarship on ISKCON describes a period of indifference, where academic interest decreased. This chapter also introduces Prabhupada's Gita, which is considered as the ultimate Indian philosophical poem, and the works published about ISKCON's historical and literary antecedents and its beliefs.
