Title: An Empirical Analysis on Consumption Characteristics of Rural Residents in China
Abstract: Using cross-sectional data from 31 provinces in 2009, we empirically analyzed consumption structure characteristics of Chinese rural households. Our empirical results showed that subsistence expenditure of Chinese rural residents was 2332.03 yuan, in which food consumption expenditure accounted for 42.09%. In terms of marginal consumption propensity, when rural resident income was increased, they firstly considered increasing expenditure in the residence and food consumption, and secondly in the transport and communications commodities. All price elasticity of consumption was negative, and this demonstrated that rural residents were strongly sensitive to changes in the prices of these goods, and that a decrease in the prices of these goods would greatly increase rural resident demand.
