Title: Expression of VEGFR-3 and its correlation with cervical lymph node metastasis in oral cancer
Abstract: Objective To investigated the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 (VEGFR 3) in human oral normal, benign epithelium and squamous cell carcinoma to elucidate its role in lymph node metastasis and tumor progression. Methods The expression of VEGFR 3 protein and its ligand VEGF C was examined and analyzed by using of immunohistochemical staining, light microscope and image analysis technique. Results VEGFR 3 was mainly expressed on the vessel structure, and a few of normal epithelium and cancer cells.VEGFR 3 positive vessel count was significantly higher in the VEGF C positive tumors than in the negative tumors( P 0.01 ),in the lymph node metastasis group than in the no metastasis group( P 0.01 ),and in the squmous cell cancinoma group than in the normal mucosa group and leukoplakia group( P 0.05 ).VEGFR 3 positive vessel count did not correlated with tumor stage and clinical stage. Conclusion VEGF C may induce the proliferation of lymphatic vessels via activation of VEGFR 3.They may play a role in lymphatic metastasis via lymphangiogenesis in human oral carcinoma.
