Title: Plasma levels of endothelin and nitric oxide in patients with essential hypertension
Abstract: Objective:To observe the plasma levels of endothelin (ET) and nitric oxide (NO) in patients with essential hypertension (EH). Methods: Plasma ET and NO contents were determined in 60 EH and 30 healthy subjects. Results: (1) ET levels were higher, and NO levels lower in EH patients than those in normal subjects (P0.01), which varied with the severity of EH (P0.01,or 0.05). (2) The changes of ET and NO levels were remarkably improved post-treatment in EH patients (P0.01). (3) ET contents were negatively correlated with NO concentrations (r=-0.5146, P0.01). Conclusion: ET and NO could be implicated in the occurrence and development of EH, which can be useful in evaluating the severity of EH.
