Title: CONFERENCE OF THE DISTINGUISHED TITLE OF "KING" UPON THE CHIEF OF THE ZHALAYI'ER TRIBE AND ITS HEREDITY
Abstract: Muhuali of the Zhalayi'er tribe was the first Yuan officer that was honored with the title for outstanding contribution. When he died in 1217, his descendants were allowed to inherit the title forever. However, inheritors of the title were usually subject to the sway of both Mongolian code of behavior and Han code of behavior as well as factors such as relationship with the Mongolian royal court. At first, the King exercised full power in managing the affairs of Central China in the name of the Yuan emperor. As a result of the Great Khan's personal appearance in military campaigns and the shift of Mongolian cultural center to the south, especially after the founding of Mongol administrative mechanism in Central China, the King gradually got out of favor and his military and political powers were weakened. He came to serve as an assistant lord protector, or simply a provincial administrator. In the middle and late Yuan Dynasty, the King lost his past glory among the emperor's favorite non-relative officials due to frequent conferences of titles upon the emperor's son-in-laws and non-relative officials.
