Title: Relationship between p~(27)~(kip1) and cellular proliferation and apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma
Abstract: AIM: To study the effects of p27 kip1 on the cellular proliferation and apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS: 52 HCC samples were examined for apoptosis by the method of terminal deoxynucleotidy1 transferase mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL). The expression of p27 kip1 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) protein was detected by immunohistochemical method. RESULTS: The results showed that HCCs with infiltration and low differentiation had significantly lower p27 kip1 LI and AI than those without infiltration and well differentiation ( P 0.05), but they had higher PCNA LI. The apoptotic index in high p27 kip1 tumors was higher than that in low p27 kip1 tumors (0.56 ±0.27 vs 0.39±0.21, P =0.0138), but PCNA expression was just the other way round(29±7 vs 33±5, P =0.0123). CONCLUSION: The expression of p27 kip1 decreases significantly as the differentiation grade of HCC becomes lower. The expression of p27 kip1 is related to the cellular proliferation and apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma.
