Title: Observations on the Efficacy of Acupuncture and Moxibustion as Main Treatment for Cervical Vertigo
Abstract: Objective To investigate the efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion as main treatment for cervical vertigo. Methods Forty-two patients were treated by acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, dermal scraping, traction, manual reposition and preventive health care. As a control, randomly selected 44 patients were treated by intravenous drip of 5% glucose solution with vinpocetine 20-30 mg and oral administration of flunarizine 20 mg before sleep every night. The therapeutic effects and the courses of treatment were compared. Results After the first course of treatment, the total efficacy rate was 40.5% in the treatment group and 52.3% in the control group and there was a statistically significant difference (P0.01). The therapeutic effect was better in the control group than in the treatment group. After the second course of treatment, the total efficacy rate was 88.1% in the treatment group and 86.4% in the control group and there was no statistically significant difference (P0.05). After the third course of treatment, the total efficacy rate was 97.6% in the treatment group and 86.4% in the control group and there was a statistically significant difference (P0.01). The therapeutic effect was better in the treatment group than in the control group. Conclusion Intravenous drip of vasodilators has a better therapeutic effect on acute-stage cervical vertigo. In the middle and late stages, traditional Chinese medical treatment is clearly superior to treatment with simple vasodilators.
