Title: The Effect of Balloon Catheter on Diagnosis in Hysterosalpingography
Abstract: Objective To determine the effect of balloon catheter on diagnosis in hysterosalpingography (HSG) and preventing methods. Materials and Methods From 2008-1-1 to 2009-7-1,all the women undergoing HSG for infertility were observed. The problem resulted by balloon catheter were divided into three groups:cervical canals group (A),uterine cavity group (B),and fallopian tube group (C). According to the type of problem, the location and depth of the catheter were adjusted, then the exam continued and the results were recorded. The data was analyzed by SPSS 13.0.The incidence of tubal obstruction was evaluated for balloon catheter (χ2 test). Results There were 1456 consecutive HSG cases and 816 (28.13%) of the 2901 tubes were obstructed. In 91 cases, the catheter were not be correctly inserted. There were 3,14 and 88 cases in the three groups respectively and 3,11 and 58 cases were improved after adjustment. In group C,84 cases were adjusted successfully,26 cases(30.95%) showed tubal obstruction. The rate of tubal obstruction in group C was higher than the others (χ2=0.341,P= 0.559).The obstructed fallopian tubes (26 cases) of catheter side were more than the opposite (16 cases),but there was not significant differences(χ2=3.175,P=0.075).The rate of proximal tubal obstruction (12 cases) of the catheter side was higher than the opposite side (4 cases)(χ2=4.421,P= 0.035). Conclusion When we use balloon catheter for hysterosalpingography or hydrotubation test, the factors leading to misdiagnosis should be noted, especially in the cases with uterine abnormalities.
