Title: New routes for dissociation of ethylene complexes of platinum(II): reduction and hydrohalogenation of ethylene in aqueous acid solutions
Abstract: At 353 K in 2.5 M NaI solution with (HClO/sub 4/) = 2.5 M and (Pt(II)) = 0.1 M (initial complex K/sub 2/PtCl/sub 4/ or KPtCl/sub 3/(C/sub 2/H/sub 4/)) ethylene gave a 1.5:1 mixture of ethane and ethyl iodide with a first-order rate constant of k = 2.35/centered dot/10/sup /minus/2/ sec/sup /minus/1/. Under those conditions, the half-life for conversion of ethyl iodide to ethane and ethylene was several hours. At a steady ionic strength ((NaI) + (HClO/sub 4/) = 5.0 M) k increased with increase in concentration of platinum (II), I/sup minus/, and H/sup +/. An increased yield of ethane was also obtained with higher H/sup +/ and Pt(II) concentrations. The reaction products were identified, and the yields were determined by GLC.
