Methods: 8-week-old SPF grade female Babl/c mice were randomly divided into irradiation and normal control groups. The irradiation group receive received 6.0 Gy of 60Coγ ray for the whole body, while the control group did not irradiation in the early stage. After the first irradiation, bone marrow biopsy was taken at different time points, and slices of the bone marrow were made to compare between the two groups for their pathological changes. An image analysis system,PAS-8000,was employed to measure the area of the intramedullar fat cells in the slices. In order to exclude the impact of time course during the lifespan in mice,at day 48 after the first irradiation the remaining mice of the two groups were given 6.0 Gy of 60Coγ ray for whole body irradiation. At day 6 after the second irradiation, bone marrow biopsy was taken and slices were analzed pathologically. Results: Adipose tissue was observed in mouse bone marrow 6 days after irradiation with 6.0 Gy of 60Coγ ray. There after increased adipose tissue was observed in the bone marrow, and it reached the highest level at day 24,but decreased at day 48 significantly. In contrast, the bone marrow adipose tissue in the control did not increase from day 6 to day 48,although the adipose tissue was detectable 6 days after the irradiation of 6.0 Gy of 60Coγ ray.Conclusion:60Coγ radiation can cause adipogenesis in bone marrow in mice.Read More
