Title: A study of radiofrequency thermocoagulation through trigeminal peripheral branches in treatment of first division trigeminal neuralgia
Abstract: Objective To evaluate the effect of radiofrequency thermocoagulation(PRT) through trigeminal peripheral divisions in treatment of idiopathic first division trigeminal neuralgia. Methods A total of 63 patients with idiopathic first division trigeminal neuralgia were divided into three groups.Patients in group 1(20 cases) were treated with radiofrequency thermocoagulation on trigeminal ganglion, while in group 2(30 cases) were treated with PRT through supraorbital foramen, and in group 3(13 cases) were treated with supraorbital nerve avulsion. The rate of immediate easement of pain, side effect and the recurrence rate were evaluated with χ2 test. Results The rate immediate easement of pain were 95%,93% and 92% in groups 1,2,3 respectively. There was no significant difference between three groups(P=0.9480.05).After three years the recurrence rates were 25%,27% and 61% respectively, and after five years the recurrence rates were 35%,40% and 69% respectively. Conclusion PRT is an effective method on treating idiopathic first division trigeminal neuralgia.
