Title: Effect of soft contact lenses on high order aberrations in normal eyes with myopia
Abstract: Objective To evaluate the effect of soft contact lenses on higher order aberrations(HOA)in normal eyes with myopia. Methods HOA of 31 eyes of 62 patients with myopia were quantified with a BaushLomb Zywave wavefront analyzer.Root mean square(RMS)values of the total HOA,total coma, total trefoil and total spherical aberrations were obtained in the same eyes with and without soft contact lenses. Results Mean RMS values for all higher order aberration components with and without contact lenses were:total HOA(0.363±0.129)um without lenses and(0.472±0.150)um with lenses(P0.01),total coma(0.186±0.102)um without lenses and(0.210±0.130)um with lenses(P=0.49),total trefoil(0.203±0.072)um without lenses and(0.224±0.142)um with lenses(P=0.08),total spherical aberration(0.126±0.120)um without lenses and(0.148±0.096)um with lenses(P=0.32).Conclusion Soft contact lenses induced a significant increase in total HOA and showed no effect on total coma, trefoil and spherical aberration.
