Abstract: The theory of goodness by Mencius is the internal reason that stimulates the birth of his thought of ecological ethnics. As far as Mencius is concerned, man is good in nature, so a man with a good nature will cherish things on earth, and this is the law of ecological ethnics. Such a proposition also reveals Mencius’ thought of ecological ethnics that a man good in nature should identify himself with the things on earth. And his idea of an ideal ecological society is fully permeated with his thought of ecological ethnics. Mencius advocates that a benevolent government should be established to rule by ethics instead of war, as is, judging from the perspective of ecological ethnics, conducive to protecting the ecological resources. His views on ecological ethnics make clear the importance of man’s dependence on nature for survival and calls for fostering the sense of responsibility to protect the natural resources so as to benefit mankind. And I think this will be of great importance for man to seek unity with nature, to maintain the ecological balance and to promote the sustainable development of the society.
