Title: Biological Characteristics and Potential Applications of Angiopoietins
Abstract: The family of angiopoietin(Ang) plays an important role in the formation of the blood vascular system. It includes four members of Ang-1, Ang-2, Ang-3 and Ang-4, which all bind to the receptor Tie-2. Ang-1 binds to Tie-2 and subsequently activates the downstream signaling pathway, leading to anti-apoptosis, survival and migration of endothe- lial cells. Ang-2 acts as a natural antagonist of Ang-1, playing a different role. In the presence of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF), Ang-2 leads to robust angiogenesis, while in the absence of VEGF, vessel regression results. Angiopoietin is involved in many diseases about angiogenesis such as tumor, so may have great prospects for the treatment of these diseases.
