Title: Relationship between the cervical metastasis and the sonographic assessment of the cervical lymph node in supraglottic carcinoma
Abstract: OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between the sonographic assessment of the cervical lymph node and the lymphatic metastasis of the supraglottic carcinoma.METHODS Data from 58 cases of supraglottic carcinoma were retrospectively collected and the relationship between the sonographic assessment and the metastasis of cervical lymph node was analyzed.RESULTS ①The long diameters of the metastatic biggest lymph nodes and that of non-metastatic lymph nodes were 2.30±0.82 and 1.46±0.59 respectively(P0.01),the short diameters were 1.58±0.63 and 0.67±0.26(P0.01)and the long/short ratios were 1.46±0.33 and 2.19±0.43(P0.01).All the differences between the metastatic and non-metastatic lymph node were statistically significant;and it was the same for the corticomedullary delimitation and the internal echo of these biggest lymph nodes.②Among these lymph nodes whose long diameter were less than or equal to 1cm,5% were found metastatic,5% were of indistinct corticomedullary delimitation, and all showed homogeneous echo pattern.CONCLUSION For supraglottic carcinoma, metastasis of cervical lymph node may be significantly correlated to their size, their corticomedullary delimitation, and their internal echo of the lymph nodes;simultaneous neck dissection should be carefully selected for those patients whose largest cervical lymph node is equal to or less than 1.0 cm and no metastasis has been confirmed.
