Title: Individual and Collectivism --Comparison and Contrast from the Angle of Humanity between the Novels by Jin yong and the Novels by Gu Long
Abstract: As masters of the swordsman fiction, both Jin Yong and Gu Long concern humanity. The former, however, concentrates on man's social existence and regards reason and moral sense as the basis on which humanity is formed. In this sense he shows his concern about the latter emphasizes man's biological existence and mainly describes desires and instincts of human beings. Thus he lays more emphasis on personal qualities and individual intoxication. The difference results from different degrees to which the two writers make use of western cultures for reference, their different orientations towards history and reality, and their distinct personalities as well. In addition, a tragic sense is also reflected to the swordsmen in Jin Yong's stories, which indicates that they are caught up in the sad and involuntary mentality and they have no alternative.
