Title: An Analysis of Features of the Translation of Examples in a Productive Bilingual Dictionary
Abstract: The essential principles in translating examples in bilingual dictionary is to retain the original functions of the examples in source language, such as providing definition, discriminating senses, giving clue on syntactical collocation and conveying culture features. As productive bilingual dictionary plays a demonstrating role in guiding users in their active productions, it should pay special attention to the translation of those examples provided within it. Specifically, they have following features: the words adopted in the definition of entry should be in accordance with those adopted in the translation of its examples; the markedness of the entry should be embodied in the translation of examples; proverbs, idioms and phrases of distinguishing features in source language should be provided with corresponding ones with equivalent effects in target language; the translation should be good enough in specific context to serve as an example for the users to follow.
