Title: Review on the Definition of Bilingual Dictionary
Abstract: Traditionally, the readers of bilingual dictionaries only find the translation equivalents by using bilingual dictionaries. They just pay more attention to how to say the source words in the target language and what the grammatical knowledge of the source words. Gradually, with the understanding of the global trend, the bilingual readers also hope to get more about the inner lingual knowledge, especially the differences on culture and cognition between the two languages involved in bilingual dictionaries. Therefore, the defining style of bilingual dictionaries changes with the need of readers and societies. The principles of defining the source entries also change from lexical equivalents to cultural equivalents. This paper discusses the disputes on the definition of bilingual dictionaries under the influence of the theory of equivalence, semantics and bilingual lexicography. The purpose is to show that the defining principle of bilingual dictionaries tends to culture and cognition-centered.
