Title: Controlled study of citalopram and venlafaxine in treatment of patients with senile depression
Abstract: Objective:To compare the efficacy and side effects between citalopram and venlafaxine in the treatment of patients with senile depression.Method:58 patients who met Chinese classification of mental disorders third edition for senile depression were randomly assigned to two groups. One group was treated with citalopram and the other with venlafaxine for six weeks. The efficacy was assessed with Hamilton depression scale(HAMD) and the clinical global impression scale(CGI),and the side effect was evaluated with treatment emergent symptom scale(TESS).Results:After six weeks treatment, the effective rate of the citalopram group and the paroxetine group were 89.7% and 86.2%,respectively.They had no significant differences between two groups. Both of them took effect more quickly and their side effects were less and mild. Conclusion:It suggests that both citalopram and venlafaxine might be recommended as appropriated drugs in the treatment of senile depression.
