Title: On the Origin of Princesses in the Tang Dynasty
Abstract: It is an important measure for the rulers in the Tang Dynasty to cope with the issue of minority nationality to cement relations with the rulers of minority nationalities in the border areas by marrying the daughters of the Han imperial family to them. During 280 years of the Tang Dynasty, there were altogether 20 princesses of this kind. From historical records, except 6 of these princesses, all the others were not the daughters of the Han emperors but the girls in the royal clans, most of them were emperors' nieces or the daughters of whose officials with outstanding service to the royal family. Though most of these princesses were fake ones , their families all had close relationships with the royal family Li, and their statuses had no marked difference with those of the genuine princesses.
