Title: Effect of Combined Use of Acupuncture and Medicine to Regulate Yin and Yang on Postapoplectic Limb Spasm
Abstract: Objective To compare the effect of acupuncture plus medicine for regulating yin and yang with conventional acupuncture on the myodynamia and muscular tension of the spastic paralyzed limb and activity of daily living (ADL) in stroke patients. Methods Sixty-nine patients meeting the inclusion criteria were randomly allocated to a treatment group of 35 cases and a control group of 34 cases. The treatment group was treated with acupuncture plus Chinese herbal medicine and the control group, with conventional acupuncture only. The myodynamia and muscular tension of the hemiplegic limb and activity of daily living (ADL) were evaluated in both group of patients before and one month after treatment. Results Of the treatment group after treatment, marked effectiveness occurred in 18 cases, effectiveness in 11 cases and ineffectiveness in 6 cases, with a total efficacy rate of 82.9%; of the control group after treatment, marked effectiveness occurred in 11 cases, effectiveness in 10 cases and ineffectiveness in 13 cases, with a total efficacy rate of 61.8%. There was a statistically significant difference in the total efficacy rate between the two groups (P0.01). ADL improved more in the treatment group than in the control group (P0.01). Conclusion The combined use of acupuncture and medicine to regulate yin and yang can ameliorate myodynamia and muscular tension, promote the recovery of affected limb function and improve activity of daily living more effectively in patients with postapoplectic spastic paralysis. Its therapeutic effect is superior to that of conventional acupuncture.
