Title: Synthesis of isobutyl butyrate catalyzed by cerium sulfate
Abstract: Isobutyl butyrate was synthesized by using cerium sulfate as the catalyst.Factors influencing the yield including the amount of catalyst,reaction time,molar ratio of alcohol to acid and recycling of the catalyst were discussed.The catalyst showed many advantages such as insoluble in reaction system,high activity,short reaction time,little waste discharging and no water carrying agents.It was also non-corrosive and non-polluted to the environment.It overcame the disadvantages of using concentrated sulfuric acid in the esterification reaction.The best conditions were n-butyric acid 0.15mol,molar ratio of alcohol to acid 1.1,the catalyst 1.1g and reaction time 90min.The yield reached to 86.1%.Experimental results showed that cerium sulfate was the efficient,high active and environmental friendly catalyst for synthesis of isoamyl butyrate.
