Title: Feeding habits of Ilisha elongata in the East China Sea
Abstract: A total of 309 specimens of Ilisha elongata were sampled from seasonal surveys in the East China Sea in May,August, and November in 2008 and February in 2009.By analyzing the stomach content, more information was revealed on feeding habits of Ilisha elongata in the East China Sea.The results showed that more than 60 prey species were ingested by Ilisha elongata, while planktonic crustaceans and small-scale marine fish and unidentified cephalopoda constituted the dominant prey groups. At the species level,as indicated by the percentage index of relative importance,Benthosema pterotum, accounting for 46.54%,was the most dominant prey, followed by Acetes chinensis 30.38%,Euphausia pacifica 11.26% and unidentified cephalopoda 6.48%.The percentage of empty stomach and mean stomach fullness index, analyzed by applying the chi-square test and Kruskal-Wallis test, varied significantly among different seasons but not among different size classes. It was indicated that the feeding intensity was the highest in spring and the lowest in winter.
