Abstract:This study was conducted to compare the differences of morphological development of amyloplasts from wheat,rice and maize endosperm.Three types of cereal crops,namely,wheat cultivar Yannong 19,rice cu...This study was conducted to compare the differences of morphological development of amyloplasts from wheat,rice and maize endosperm.Three types of cereal crops,namely,wheat cultivar Yannong 19,rice cultivar Yangdao6,and maize cultivar Yangnuo 1were investigated using resin semi-thin section,microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.The development of amyloplast from endosperm cells adjacent to aleurone layer and central endosperm cells were compared.The main results were as follows:(1)Morphologies of amyloplasts in central endosperm cells of wheat,rice and maize changed along with the caryopsis growth.Wheat amyloplasts changed from longilineal to irregular in shape,rice amyloplasts changed from spindle to ellipsoidal,and maize amyloplasts changed from spheroidal to irregular.(2)Amyloplasts in endosperm cells adjacent to aleurone layer were smaller than those in central endosperm cell at later developmental stage.(3)In mature wheat caryopsis,amyloplasts were composed of two types of amyloplasts,which were large in size and pie in shape or small in size and spheroidal in shape.Most amyloplasts were angular and few amyloplasts were spheroidal in shape in mature rice caryopsis.Amyloplasts were irregular and spheroidal in shape in mature maize caryopsis.(4)Size distribution was widest in wheat starch granules,followed by maize and rice.Maize starch granules exhibited the largest average size,followed by wheat and rice.(5)Wheat,rice and maize endosperm contained single and compound amyloplasts.Most amyloplasts were single in wheat and maize endosperm and were compound in rice endosperm.The results indicated that amyloplasts in different region of endosperm from wheat,rice and maize showed many similarities and differences.Read More
