Title: A Re-evaluation of the Role of Shanghai Port in Early Modern Times
Abstract: Many scholars hold that Shanghai was China's most important port and the shipping center in Far East in early modern times. This paper gives a re-evaluation of the role of Shanghai Port from the local, national and international perspectives, and concludes that from the local perspective,Shanghai Port was the most important one in the port network in the Yangtze River Delta Region;from the national perspective,Shanghai Port was only the hub port in the central and northern regions of China;from the international perspective,Shanghai Port was one of the most important ports in Far East, but in a certain sense only a feeder port to the Japanese port network.
