Abstract: Lying on the intersection where economic and cultural activities, especially trade occur, modern port has gone beyond the basic function of being transportation hub. With Guanghzou Port as the case, this paper addresses the issue of multi-functional development of modern ports. First of all, Guangzhou port is an important bulk port. The cargo structure, the origin and destination of bulk cargo through the port are examined. Meanwhile, the weakness of Guangzhou Port as a container port is pointed out. Secondly, the development of the port secondary industry is studied, which shows that the port area exits as an industrial complex. Thirdly, the port service industry is studied with some originality by the author, who views Guangzhou port as the generator of port service industries. In conclusion, the author suggests the inter-linkage of the above mentioned port functions.
