Title: Relation between Depression and Social Support on Obese College Students
Abstract: Objective To explore the relationship between depression and social support on obese college students.Methods One hundred and seventy-one obese college students(obesity group) and 186 normal college students(normal group) were selected as subjects to fill out the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale(CES-D) and Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS).The degree of depression,scores of family support,subjective support,frequency of using support and total social support were measured.Results Depression score in obese college students was significantly higher than that in normal college students(P0.01).Depression score in female college students was significantly higher than that in male college students(P0.01).The scores of family support,subject support,frequency of using support and total social support in low depression group were significantly higher than those in high depression group and middle depression group(P0.01).The score of total social support in middle group depression were significantly lower than that in low depression group(P0.01).There was a significant negative correlation between depression and family support,subject support,frequency of using support,and total social support on obese college students(r=-0.304,-0.326,-0.315,-0.376,all P0.05).Conclusion Obesity is an important factor for depression in college students.More social support should be given to obese college studeonts to reduce their depression.
