Title: INFECTION OF NASOPHARYNGEAL CARCINOMA CELLS (CNE LINE) WITH EPSTEIN-BARR VIRUS
Abstract: The epithelioid cells of CNE line, which was derived from a well differentiated human nasopharyngeal carcinoma without EB virus genome (EBNA negative), could be infected by EB virus through cocultivation with virus productive B95-8 or P_3HP-1 line, but not with virus-nonproductive Raji line. The experimental results are summarized in the following table.
The possibility that the EBNA positive cells might be B95-8 or P_3HR-1 cells attaching the feeder layer could be excluded, since when such cells were cocultivated with BEL-7402 cell (an epithelioid cell line established from human liver cell carcinoma), no EBNA positive cells were observed. Owing to a preliminary experimental result indicating that CNE cells could not be infected directly by B95-8 virus, it is suggested that the way by which EB virus get into the CNE cells may be due to a close contaction and/or cell fusion between CNE and B95-8 or P_3HR-1 cells.
