Title: A Survey of the Study of Translation Shifts: from Vinay, Darbelnet to Toury
Abstract: The study of translation shifts, which attempts to systematically describe and classify the small linguistic changes occurring in translation of ST to TT so as to establish the semantic, stylistic, pragmatic, cohesive and aesthetic relationships between them, can be traced back to the 1950s. During its development of more than fifty years, the study of translation shifts has also moved on from Vinay and Darbelnet's detailed taxonomies of translation procedures in the early stage, to Toury's current study of norms governing and constraining translation shifts. The present paper reviews the history of the study of translation shifts, compares various models and points out trends of development in the future.
