Title: EFFECT OF NITRATE AND AMMONIUM ON ROOT GROWTH OF CALLISTEPHUS CHINENSIS(CHINA-ASTER) SEEDLING
Abstract: Roots adapt to changes in environmental nutrients by morphological plasticity. How nitrogen concentration or nitrogen form affect root plasticity is an important biological problem.Effects of different concentrations of nitrogen(NO3-:1,10,30 mmol·L-1;NH4+:1,5,10 mmol·L-1) and different forms of nitrogen(NH4+ and NO3-) on Chinese aster growth, root morphology and root biomass were investigated;it was found that with increased nitrate treatment time, root length, surface area, volume and root dry weight decreased significantly with increasing concentrations, but did not change in root to shoot ratio and root diameter;the results of ammonium treatment were the same;under the same concentration, especially in 10 mmol·L-1 ammonium on root inhibition was significantly stronger than the nitrate. These data indicated that China aster could adapt to different nitrogen concentrations and different nitrogen forms by changes in root morphology and root growth and development.
