Title: Effects of Heterogeneous Nitrogen Patch of Soil on Maize Root
Abstract: In recent years, fertilization amount has being increased in China, which produces more and more nutrient patches in agricultural soil.It has been proved that nutrient patch had the great effect on root growth. However, the nutrient patch was always regarded as homogeneous one in previous studies. In fact,it was greatly different from actual nutrient patch. In this study,specially-designed container was used to produce heterogeneous nitrogen patch, whose effect on the growth of maize root was investigated. The results showed that nitrogen concentration affected significantly root growth tendency in nitrogen patch.Total fresh weight of root was not significantly affected by nitrogen patch, but total fresh weight of shoot was significantly affected in different treatments. In nitrogen patch, certain nitrogen concentration(the ratio of urea weight and soil weight less than 1∶400) could induce root growth tendency, increase activity of nitrate reductase and NO3--N concentration in root, also could improve plant growth. On the contrary, high nitrogen concentration resulted in lower activity of nitrate reductase and NO3--N concentration in root as well as low growth, though root activity increased with increasing fertilization amount.pH and NO3--N concentration in rhizosphere of nitrogen patch with higher fertilization amount were higher than those in rhizosphere of nitrogen patch with lower fertilization amount, which might be main factors negatively affecting root growth.
