Method: A total of 64 elderly patients with schizophrenia were randomly treated with quetiapine or risperidone for 6 months. Positive and negative syndrome scale(PANSS) was used to assess efficacy, generic quality of life inventory (GQOLI) to assess quatity of life, social disability screening schedule(SDSS) to assess social function, and treatment emergent symptoms scale(TESS) to assess side effects. Results: After 6-month treatment,PANSS total scores in two groups significantly decreased (P 0. 01) ,there was no significant difference between two groups (P 0. 05) . Quetiapine group improved more significantly on GQOLI and SDSS total score as well as factor scores (P 0. 01) and showed fewer the side effects (P 0. 01) than risperidone group. Conclusion: Quetiapine has better effects for improving quality of life and social function in elderly patients with schizophrenia.Read More
