Title: Clinical Study of Telmisartan in the Treatment of Hypertension
Abstract: Objective To investigate the clinical safety and efficacy of telmisartan in the treatment of patients with mild to moderate hypertension. Methods One hundred thirty-nine patients with mild to moderate hypertension were randomly divided into telmisartan ( n =72, 40-80 mg/d) or fosinopril( n =67, 10-20 mg/d) for 26 weeks. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was undertaken before and after the treatment. 24 hours mean blood pressure, trough/peak ratio, BP in 2:00-{8:00} AM, effective rate, and side effects were evaluated. Results Both SBP and DBP decreased in two groups after the treatment. The effective rates were 75% in telmisartan group and 72% in fosinopril group. The trough/peak ratio in telmisartan group was higher than that in fosinopril group (SBP 72% vs 62%, DBP 75% vs 63%). Reduction of mean SBP and DBP in telmisartan group was greater than that in fosinopril group during 2:00-8:00 AM period. Telmisartan was well tolerated. ConclusionTelmisartan is safe and effective in the treatment of mild to moderate hypertension.
