Title: Efficacy and the Safety of Irbesartan in Treatment of Hypertension
Abstract: Objective To evaluate the efficacy and the safety of irbesartan in treatment of hypertension. Methods One hundred twenty patients with mild or moderate hypertension were randomly assigned to receive 150 mg·d -1 Irbesartan ( n =60) or Losartan 50 mg·d -1 ( n =60) for 8 weeks. A trough sitting DBP and HR was measured before and biweekly after medication. Adverse effects were recorded. Blood biochemical tests were studied before and after drugs. DHCT 12.5 mg·d -1 were added when DBP was 90 mmHg at the fourth week of study. Results 40% in patients of irbesartan group and 35% in losartan group achieved goal sitting DBP less than 90 mmHg. The total response rate was 78 3% for irbesartan group and 66 7% in losartan group( P 0 05). Irbesartan is more effective in reduction of sitting DBP than that by losartan ( P 0 05). Conclusion Both irbesartan and losartan decreased high BP with less mild adverse effect. Irbesartan seems to be more effective in the reduction of DBP.
