Title: Expression of Livin mRNA and SMAC proteins in hepatocellular carcinoma
Abstract: Objective To investigate the expression of Livin mRNA and SMAC protein in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and their correlation with metastasis and recurrence. Methods The expression of Livin mRNA was investigated by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in 50 HCC tissues and 50 normal tissues adjacent to cancer. The expression of SMAC protein in the same cases was detected by immunohistochemestry (IHC). Results The positive rates of SMAC in tumor tissues were significantly lower than that in normal tissues adjacent to cancer. The expressions of Livin mRNA was significantly correlated with the portal vein tumor thrombus, the recurrence of tumor, the presence of extrahepatic metastasis and the differentiation of tumor. The protein expression of SMAC was significantly correlated with the clinical stage, the portal vein tumor thrombus, the recurrence of tumor, the presence of extrahepatic metastasis and the differentiation of tumor. Conclusion The inactivation of SMAC and overexpression of Livin protein might enhance the hepatocytes proliferation and malignant transformation that play an important role in the progress of HCC.
