Title: A Construction Grammar Approach to Chinese "Adjective+Object" Structure
Abstract: Some Chinese adjectives are coerced into transitive verbs when they participate in the transitive construction.Due to the varied meanings of the adjectives, two constructions are formed, whose meanings are CAUSE-BECOME and CAUSE-FEEL,respectively.The causative force of the former is directed right towards Object/Patient and that of the latter left towards Subject/Experiencer.The two constructions share the same grammatical form but differ in meaning, hence homonymic constructions. The former is used with greater frequency than the latter. The constructions are the result of categorization,by way of interaction between induction and deduction. This research is an attempt to explore transitive construction, homonymic constructions and word class variations.
