Abstract: Liu Xin,a well-known scholar in the late Western Han Dynasty, who hovered between academic studies and entering politics, had his unique view of politics, including the idea of grand unity, the idea of li (propriety) and the idea of chanrang (retiring and giving room to better men). His idea of grand unity, which was a complement and deepening of the idea of his predecessors, included maintaining central authority, the consensus of all under heaven, the unity of length, capacity and weight, and the unity of heaven, earth and people. His idea of li showed his understanding and valuing the important political role of li in maintaining order and stabilizing society. His idea of chanrang is shown in his pursuit of the political system of selecting the good and the capable for public service and his pursuit of a harmonious and stable society. All the three aspects of Liu Xin's political philosophical thinking agreed with each other, which reflected his pursuit of the harmonious and stable social order.
