Title: The effect and characteristic of mastoidectomy in children
Abstract: Objective To explore the characteristic and the effect of mastoidectomy in children. Methods One hundred and five patients(131 ears) with mastoidectomy in our department from 1985 to 2001 were retrospected. Of this series, there were 69 males (86 ears) and 36 females (45 ears). The age of patients was with average of 6.05 years old. It's 4.25 years from the first time of purulence to operation. Before operation, the purulence time was ranged from 1 to 18 years with the 3.25 years on average. Results There were only 48 ears who had unambiguous causes in present series. The most often cause was acute otitis in 16 ears(33.3%), following by outer auditory mateus deformity in 14 ears. Of rate of ear dry, there was no statistically difference between traditional mastoidectomy in 83 ears and modified mastoidectomy with tympanoplast in 38 ears. Hearing threshold of latter group was 39.52 ± 12.08 dBHL, and apparently it's better than that of the former(62.52 ± 10.35 dBHL). The rate of operative complication was 12.2%, including narrow of outer auditory mateus in 10 cases (7.6%), facial paralysis in 3 cases, vertigo in 6 cases, cerebrospinal fluid leakage in 1 case, hearing loss in 1 case, and incision infection in 3 cases. Conclusion The mastoidectomy was an operation with higher risk in children than that in adults. It is important to minimal the operation complications, and according to the different situation the operative method with hearing preservation should be selective individually.
